Male-Privilege,
Another Perspective Male-Privilege,
Another Perspective It is currently being thought that misogyny starts near the moment of birth for most boys. Shortly after birth, 70% of American boys have the privilege of being sexually mutilated (circumcised) compared to .4% in Great Britain. Is it any wonder that over 15 million men are impotent and another 12 million lack sexual desire. Men have the privilege to grow in a society that encourages boys to "be tough". Dads and moms buy war toys. And, 64% of adolescent boys hit or beat-up another kid in the past year. In their lifetime, one in five men will spend a night in jail and men represent 70% of the prison population. Men also have the unique privilege of expecting to willingly give up their life to protect others. There are currently 78M MIAs (Missing In Action) from WWII and 3M from Viet Nam. More than 25% of Viet Vets suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And, because men are encouraged and expected to do the dangerous and risky jobs, 97% of industrial deaths and disabling accidents happen to men. 30 of every 1,000 minors and 60 of every 1,000 farmer died or were disabled on the job in one single year. And, while it is the privilege of men to give up 5 years of their life versus women, if they've been encouraged into pro-football, they will die 14 years earlier. And, if it's pro-boxing that they've been told "makes a real man", 87% of them will suffer brain damage. With all this, a man has the distinct privilege of 5 fewer years to enjoy life, 7 years less to enjoy their kids, 5 years less to enjoy their grandchildren (if at all) and 5 years less to play. If a man makes it to retirement, he'll die an average of 2 years later. Men have been encouraged to "burn the midnight oil" or "candle at both ends" at work for that chance at the executive carrot that fewer than 10% of men will ever get. And, of all the baseball players who sign a pro contact, fewer than 10% ever appear in a major league game. It has been the privilege of men to become "big boys who don't cry". The average man cries 1.4 times a month to 5.3 for women. The average American man touches another human being 6-8 times a day, 4-6 of them sexual. The average Spanish man touches another human being over 100 times a day, 6-8 of them are sexual. While men take twice as long to commit in relationship, only 20% of them file for divorce and 80% of them say they would marry their former wives if they had it to do over (versus only 50% of the women). So, in divorce, 58% of men say they ere happier compared to 85% of women and, if it happens, they will suffer 3 times more depression, and 2 times more illness. And, while still seen by most courts as having sole financial responsibility for the needs of the family, no matter what, 80% of the 8 million news jobs created have gone to women. Is if any wonder that men represent 75% of the mental ward population. And, while only representing 30% of the suicide attempts, men represent 80% of successful suicides (as adolescents or adults). While this is not meant to defend
men's past actions, and expects them to be accountable for
them, this does lead one to think that maybe they aren't the
only ones creating the world that provides this privilege.
Would you trade places? - Gordon Clay - (Circa1984) Difference
beween Gender Equity and Gender Equality Gender equality prevents violence against women and girls. It's essential for economic prosperity. Societies that value women and men as equal are safer and healthier. Gender equality is a human right. Gender is an important consideration in development. It is a way of looking at how social norms and power structures impact on the lives and opportunities available to different groups of men and women. Globally, more women than men live in poverty. Globally, more men die by suicide than women. The term equity refers to fairness and justice and is distinguished from equality: Whereas equality means providing the same to all, equity means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances. Chores: Boys
are more likely than girls to have maintenance
chores around the house such as painting and mowing the
lawn, while girls are likely to have domestic chores such as
cooking and doing the laundry. By assigning household tasks
in such a definitive way, children then link certain types
of work with gender. Gender
Equity Vs. Gender Equality: Whats the Distinction? In Hollywood, in the news, in classrooms and in boardrooms, important and historic conversations are taking place. The narrative surrounding gender equality, a conversation seemingly as old as time itself, has taken center stage in the global consciousness bringing new eyes and a new generation of leaders and advocates to the fore. There is however an important distinction that needs to be understoodgender equality and gender equity are related terms but have different meanings. While the words sound similar, the definitions and practical usage are different. At Pipeline, the word equity is dual-purpose. Related to gender and the workplace, equity sets the stage for equality, as it refers to the fairness of treatment for both women and men, according to the their respective needs. If equality is the end goal, equity is the means to get there. Gender equality, equality between men and women does not mean that women and men have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities and opportunities will not depend on whether they were born male or female. Gender equity means fairness of treatment for men and women according to their respective needs. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but which is considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations, and opportunities. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESDOC) The word equity also has deep financial implications. In the world of business, a broad definition of equity is the financial value of an asset after subtracting the value of liabilities. At Pipeline, we tie an increase in financial performance for companies to closing the gender equity gap. In an era where increasing numbers of women are exiting the workforce, and where there is a $2 Trillion GDP gap in the United States, there is money to be made on both sides of the fencefor female employees and for the enterprise. The dual meaning of the word equity presents both a challenge and an opportunity for business. A challenge because the distinction between gender equity and gender equality is unclear to most people, and bringing clarity and purpose to this conversation is an important step along the path to eliminating the gender equity gap. An opportunity because we now have the insights to open the eyes of individuals and business leaders as to this distinction, thereby making it possible to move forward along the journey to gender equality in the workplace. Once there is broad awareness of the opportunity, we can work together to take positive steps toward its realization. The goal at Pipeline has always been to address and solve the issues surrounding gender equity and to monetize its impact on business. Clarifying the subtle but important distinction between the terms gender equity and gender equality is a small, first step toward realizing this economic opportunity. Shedding light on these differences,
bringing men into the conversation, and opening up space for
intelligent dialogue and healthy tension will bring us
closer to the objective of closing the gender equity gap in
our lifetime. (Editor's note: Geographic
Equity; Instead of using "urban", "rural", and "frontier",
consider changing the latter to "remote" or some other
identifier. "Frontier" is a white, invaders term used to
describe lands that have been inhabited by tribal people for
hundreds of year before the invaders tried to wipe them out.
Some of that work is still going on. - Gordon

roles for boys and girls Parents should note
that their influence is strongest when it comes to
socialisation and gender roles, and so it's important that
they pass on healthy attitudes towards gender roles. Video: What is gender equity 1:43 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG-0MRyEzPE
