I was hoping to find a list of greetings that everyone could use that would replace the line "How are you?" as a greeting since 99% of the time (my estimate) the people saying "How are you?" don't really care and, if the responder would begin telling them as if they cared, would most likely break off the conversation rather quickly, depending on their relationship with the person. If it's a clerk, probably immediately. If it is a good friend, and they are busy, maybe a few moments longer. If it's a good friend and they have time, MAYBE longer. However, they didn't mean it in the first place because it is a habitual greeting so why not save "How are you?" for a time when you would (1) really like to know more, (2) have the relationship with the person to go there in the first place, (3) are in an appropriate location if in public and (4) have a reasonable amount of time? So, I would love to see a list of casual, quick greetings that elicits a response, are cordial, and don't start a conversation. Beyond, "Beautiful day today, isn't it?"

Very well, thank-you. Because, in part, I'm fully vaxed, I do my best not to go into town more than once every two weeks for perishables when Fred Meyer opens at 6am. (Less that 30% of Curry County citizens are fully vaxed and 95% of them don't wear a mask in town.) I'm not as concerned with covid as I am with long-term covid - the hidden enemy of the heart and brain. I live rather isolated physically - down a 9/10s of a mile gravel access road with no neighbors on it) and that's okay because I also look out on the ocean about 2 miles away with only trees between me and the valley between me and the ocean And, no human made structures or noises in that space. So I get tranquility and still have the human connection with probably a minimum of 10 Zooms a week (except this week which is usually the quietest of the weeks. I write a lot, particularly about suicidality (The Oregon Health Authority put me on the executive committee for the Oregon Alliance to Prevent Suicide over a year ago and that is probably 80% of my 12-16 hour day, seven days a week. I am hampered with a numbness of my left side from a stroke I had back in 2014 and I don't have to walk with a cane and can do my annual 8 hour drive to Hood River to be with family over the holidays. I'd say I'm still having a pretty good, but less active life at 82 and 3/4 of 83 completed. I miss our gatherings and I miss doing Clearing the Air and I miss the Bay Area. And I'm content whee I am, especially with the cooler weather, and plan to live out my next 82 years here.
